چکیده

The prothrombin of the blood is elaborated in the liver. Andrus et al. (1939), and Warren and Rhoads (1939) produced experimental evidence in support, of this hypothesis. By total and partial hepatectomy in animals they produced a profound reduction in plasma prothrombin concentration which was unaffected by treatment with vitamin K and bile salts. It has been found essential to have vitamin K for the production of prothrombin, the level of which falls in subjects with vitamin K deficiency. The exact role which vitamin K plays in the formation of prothrombin is yet to be decided. Is it a necessary constituent of prothrombin or does it act as a stimulus to the liver for the formation of prothrombin ? Evidence is against the former contention, since pure prothrombin preparations do not have

The Prothrombin Response to the Parenteral Administration of Large Doses

There are a multiplicity of tests for liver functions, each depending upon a particular function of the liver. There has been growing recognition that the response in prothrombin time to the administration of vitamin K is of aid in the evaluation of hepatic function. The procedures heretofore employed to estimate the prothrombin response have lacked uniformity and, as a consequence, conflicting...

The Benefits of vitamin E on liver function and the hemopoietic System in thalassemia Patients

Abstract Background β−Thalassemic children have oxidative stress and antioxidant deficiency even without iron overload status. In these patients, tissue damage due to oxidative stress may be occurred. Also, it seems that thalassemic patients have higher levels of ALT, AST therefore, the main aim of the present study was to determine the benefits of vitamin E as an antioxidant supplements in β...

A case report of temporary and acquired vitamin K-dependent clotting factor deficiency without any response to administrated vitamin K

Abstract Background and Objectives Vitamin K-dependent clotting factor deficiency (VKCFD) is usually an acquired problem due to liver disease, malabsorption, and overdose of warfarin.  In the present paper the significance and role of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors in menorrhagia were evaluated.   Case We present a rare case of 43 year woman with acquired vitamin K deficiency and se...

Abnormal prothrombin in the plasma of rats carrying hepatic tumors.

Vitamin K is required for the posttranslational formation of gamma-carboxyglutamyl residues in a number of plasma clotting factors. Interference with vitamin K action results in the appearance of abnormal (des-gamma-carboxy) forms of prothrombin in human plasma. Vitamin K-sufficient patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma also secrete significant quantities of abnormal prothrombin; this ...

Coagulation defects in liver disease.

By the introduction of the one-stage prothrombin test in 1935 Quick first devised a measure of the coagulation defect in liver disease (Quick, Stanley-Brown, and Bancroft, 1935). He subsequently (1938) pointed out that failure to absorb vitamin K in obstructive jaundice or failure to synthesize prothrombin in disease caused by parenchymatous liver-cell damage was the cause of the prolonged one-...
